Crazy-Zen Honeymoon Photos

Just a few shots while I have a good internet connection in Baddeck, Nova Scotia! So far, I've gone a little bit crazy (as evidenced by a few crazy-eyed photos) with all the fun of a Honeymoon, but there are moments of major zen too:melissa candy.jpg Crazy for candy in Halifax. melissa zen.JPG Totally blissed out in Cape Breton National Park, on the Skyline Trail (there was real hiking to get here!). melissa lobster.JPG Insane once again, this time for lobster in Baddeck. dave lighthouse.JPG A zen moment: Dave photographing a lighthouse in Baddeck. More soon! We're still traveling around. Happy weekend.

Release Day Contest for Simply Irresistible by Jennifer Banash

SimplyIrresistible.jpgOkay, so this review quote is one I would almost kill for: "The Elite is Pretty in Pink for the millennium generation." --Romance Reviews TodayAnd today celebrates the release of the third and final book in Jennifer Banash's trilogy about small-town girl Casey McCloy who moves to New York's Upper East Side and has to deal with, well, you know. Mean girls and rich boys and all the swirling, delicious madness of the city. Third and last in The Elite series, Simply Irresistible has my favorite cover (though they're all pretty darn smashing), I think because I just love the contrast of the green with the red lips. What do you guys think--which is your favorite? theelite.jpgintoodeep2.jpgSimplyIrresistible.jpg Of note: The same art department did the Violet covers. Kudos to Penguin's Berkley Jam for really fantastic design work. Right? Oh, and don't miss the trailer for Simply Irresistible (love the song, love the production): PS-UPDATE! Jennifer has graciously agreed to donate the entire series as a prize for one lucky reader. Just comment below to enter--I'll pick a winner randomly next week!

Win-It Wednesday: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

The winner of last week's copy of Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler is... Lauren! Send me your address, L. Oh, and we did a special Sea Glass post on I Heart Daily last week, which made me think of Sarah's cover.persepolis.jpgThis week, I'm giving away a copy of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood. It's a graphic autobiography that I am just in love with. It's the tale of Satrapi's life under the Islamic Revolution, when a totalitarian rule takes hold and the Iran-Iraq war results in bombings, murdered friends and a ban on parties. Despite the serious subject, the book is filled with charm and wit and joy. And, you know, sad and scary parts too. So, to enter the contest, tell me what you're up to this summer. Camp, vacations, work, big dreams, goals... whatever. I wanna hear. Me? I'm writing and getting married. That takes up lots of time. Happy Wednesday!

Librarian Deena Lipomi Talks Covers, Part 2

Here's another taste of my fun interview with Deena Lipomi, a YA Librarian at Brighton Memorial Library in Rochester, NY. I asked her about book covers, in relation to the Cover Stories series, and she gave me all kinds of fun tidbits. Catch Part 1 here (for some reason it won't let you comment on that one--sorry!).Here's part 2, where Deena talks about more books that she sees flying off the library shelves: maximum ride.jpglaurenmyracle.jpghaddix.jpgSkybreaker_lowjpg_1467575.jpg "Some titles that go out tend to be because of the authors name printed so boldly, and no matter what the cover looks like, the book will go out because of the author. James Patterson's MAXIMUM RIDE books, anything by Lauren Myracle, Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Kenneth Oppel, to name a few. buttcheek.jpggeneration-dead.jpgcurseasdarkasgold2.jpg "The 'under the radar' books that seem to get checked out based on their covers alone are mostly the chick litty ones, like those I mentioned earlier. I couldn't believe how often that BUTT CHEEK book got checked out, but every time I put it face-out on the shelf, it was gone within hours! Same thing with GENERATION DEAD by Daniel Waters (fantastic cover; I liked that better than the book), and A CURSE DARK AS GOLD by Elizabeth Bunce (the haunting picture of the girl and the title are a real draw)." Interesting, no? Thanks, Deena! What authors make you run for the shelves? Look for part 3, about unpopular covers, soon.

Cupcakes, Marilyn Monroe and Daniel Johnston

baby-shower-cupcakes.jpgIt's my birthday; I am going to eat cupcakes all day!If you really want to make me happy for my birthday, save the date and come join me on Tuesday, June 9th at 9pm EST/6pm PST at readergirlz for a virtual launch celebration of Lovestruck Summer! We'll chatter about books, summer love, music, anything we like. And to my fellow Geminis (who are obviously the best, astrologically speaking), Happy Birthdays all around! danieljohnstonhihowareyou.jpg PS-Cupcake Witch put up a really sweet review of Lovestruck Summer and suggested a cover design for the book (which I totally love, and which involves this Daniel Johnston drawing). PPS-Marilyn Monroe would have been 83 this year, and there are some never-before-published photos up at LIFE magazine that are totally luminous. UPDATE: OMG, Thanks, guys! Jefferson Market NYPL rules!
