Photo Friday: Food and a Tornado

Just some photos from the last week to share. Most are food. I am really into food.I made a peach-and-raspberry pie! It came out really well. (I didn't make the crust. Baby steps.): peach pie.jpg My friend Anne and I had drinks at the Soho House roofdeck. My friend Jolene served us and recommended the Pepper Margarita (which was delish). As I sipped it, I watched models walk around the pool. It was such a SCENE up there. pepper margharita.jpg All week, I was enamored of the tomatoes in my farmshare (yes, I know how lame that sounds). I made Caprese salads every day (tomato, basil, mozzarella, eat!): mozz salad.jpg Last night, a tornado blew through NYC. It hit my neighborhood pretty hard, and here's the pic I snapped on my way home -- this is my block. (The NY Times has a lot of photos that are better in this really fascinating series.) Bklyn tornado.jpg Happy Friday, everyone!

Photo Friday: Sammy Davis Vintage!

Fashion Week just started in NYC, and coincidentally, I just had a vintage shopping spree that filled my closet. I went over to Sammy Davis Vintage (currently housed in an ingeniously positioned storage locker with changing room and racks and racks of amazing clothes). We had a total try-on fashion show of our own. I got this perfect fall number, which is actually a one-piece dress that looks like separates (and it totally reminds me of Love Story and Ali McGraw), and I got this 60s navy dress with matching coat (I've never had a matching coat-and-dress ensemble before--exciting!):

I also picked up this perfect-for-baby-shower spring tulip dress, and this fall-to-winter coat, which was such a great shade of orange camel that I couldn't resist.

Here are a few that I let go... I couldn't buy everything! Left to right: Amazing silver Jetsons dress, total beach-wedding-60s Lilly Pulitzer, a navy 70s dress that I loved but that really needed heels (which I hardly ever wear):

And I also didn't get this swingy black-and-white number or this yellow Lilly Pulitzer gardening dress from the 60s (with perfect shovel pocket). The purple 70s wonder didn't actually fit--it wouldn't zip up in the back but we snapped a pic anyway.

Okay, I think that's enough photos of me for a year. (And can you believe this is edited--I tried on way more!).

Love vintage--thanks, Sammy D. Happy Friday!

Photo Friday: Delaware County Fair!

A couple of weeks ago, I got to go to the Delaware County Fair. Here, a photo essay (which may as well be called a food essay, but whatever). Dreamy!Me + plate of sweet potato chips with meat toppings = big smile. chips.jpg Funnel Cake! download-2.jpg Fried Oreos are as delicious as they sound. oreos.jpg What? Have you never seen a sheep carved out of butter before? buttersheep.jpg Chicken Zingys are fried chicken rolled up in pizza dough with bbq and ranch dressing. YUM. zingy.jpg Dave washes it all down with a milkshake. davefish.jpg And later I relax with my favorite new book, Not That Type of Girl by Siobhan Vivian! (So good.) siobhan.jpg This weekend there will be less food and more books! Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Photo Friday: An Interview + Blog Star

This month I got to interview someone I'd always wanted to meet:spike.jpg He was witty and smart and we even got to laugh together in between the serious stuff! And here's the resulting piece. You guys should absolutely watch his new Gulf Coast/New Orleans documentary if you can. I was tearing up before the title screen even came on. That same day, I got to meet another superstar: Adele of Persnickety Snark (who was also funny and smart and made me laugh). We had an awesome time hearing Charlotte Sometimes play on the rooftop of the Atlas, where there was an Empire-sized view: adele.jpg Happy Friday!

Photo Friday: NY Times Styles

NYT Styles Natalie and Melissa.jpg I forgot to post this when it ran a few weeks ago, but it was super-exciting. Bill Cunningham is a legendary New York Times photographer--he's in his 80s now--and he shoots for the Styles section, among other venues. I always thought his party photos were all socialites, but now we have proof that they're not! I'm sitting in the top-right corner with my friend Natalie (and my friend white wine). Mr. Cunningham approached us at a party and we wrote down our names "in all capital letters" on his flip-top reporter's pad. He still shoots with real film. Such fun!

Happy Friday!

Photo Friday: The Book That's Following Me

I'm reading The Girl that Kicked the Hornet's Nest, which is rare for me since it's marketed to adults, which I tend not to be. This trilogy has been my summer delight (along with, ahem, The Hunger Games).I'm reading it at the country house with peach pie: country hornet.jpeg And while Dave and Swayze play with a shoestring: swayze dave.jpeg Next, I'll be so ready for Mockingjay (a box arrived at Seventeen this week, and we all screamed and fought over t-shirts and stickers and bookmarks). Twitpic here. Happy Friday! What are you reading?

Photo Friday: Stoop Sales, Peach Cake and Goodbye, Erin!

Last weekend we had a goodbye party for my friend Erin, who's moving back to San Diego (hence the I heart NY shirt). There were lots of photos, and Erin captioned them. I think this one is the only one that's suitable for blog viewing:05-party-photo.jpg Then we had a stoop sale! This is Anne (as Santa with a foot bath) and Erin (with vase I finally got rid of!). Super fun, and we each made like $100. Not bad for clearing out old stuff! stoopsale.jpg Finally, I made Peach Cake this week. I've been working hard at Seventeen, so I haven't had many culinary adventures, but this one turned out nicely! peach2.jpg What were you guys up to this week? Happy Friday!

Photo Friday: From Dave's Phone

I found a bunch of random pics on Dave's phone this week, so I thought I'd share:First, Katie asked for a kitten update. Winnie still hides a lot, but Swayze is always helping me write: me and swayze.jpg Second, I did a reading at Books of Wonder and sat beside the amazing Cory Doctorow. He made little origami paper cranes as people read. Cute. me and cory.jpg Third, when we went to DC, Dave snapped this photo of me, trying to be all "red carpet pose" when I was at the Smithsonian gardens. Silly. me in dc.jpg Fourth, we also went to Innisfree Gardens upstate and I got lost in the lovely lilypads! innisfree gardens.jpg Fifth, I hit a taco truck in Chapel Hill with my friend Max. Delicious. me and max.jpg And sixth, I got my first pair of Toms shoes! Love them! toms.jpg PS-Here's where I'm filling in as Features Editor for a little while. So I may not blog as much... busy, busy! Rihanna-Seventeen-cover-August-2010.jpg Happy Friday!
