I'm packing some things, and I came across this photo of my grandparents, Tay and Don, in Florida sometime in the 70s--Grandma wrote the caption. How adorable are they?
They both passed away a few years ago, but they were a hilarious pair, and I still laugh at our memories together.
I've been thinking a lot about my cover (mainly because I'm loving this apple-bite challenge--keep the entries coming!) and then I started to muse about girls-lying-in-grass and all the pretty covers I've seen with this theme. Here are four:
So that's my own Small Town Sinners, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (Cover Story), Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott (Cover Story) and The Day Beforeby Lisa Schroeder (this one's brand new! I hope to do a Cover Story soon!). Despite the similarities, I think they all have really different tones. Do you guys know of any more?
So last week I tried a Lucky magazine tip, which was to put bumble & bumble Surf Spray (which I love) in your hair, and then make 3 buns and sleep in them. They promised "waves." I got French Poodle! But hey, it did deliver volume.
Then, I got a haircut yesterday with a decidedly different look. More Ramona Quimby, or as Bethany H. noted, Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird.
I don't think a pregnant person should be messing with her hair this much -- it can get traumatic. I'll stop now.
and lovely Caprese Salad (plus birthday strawberry shortcake!) at an outdoor bbq...
and then I spent the week rearranging my book the old-fashioned way (friends on twitter tell me I should get Scrivener, and I'm definitely considering it).
The fantastic Andie of Air Productions made this trailer for Small Town Sinners! Below, a few early reviews. July 19th... it's coming!
(Forgive me for this moment of shameless my-own-book promotion. I really, really hope you guys like this one!)
"A non-judgmental, nuanced, fascinating look at the teenage religious right... Walker writes an outstanding contemporary novel with a cast of characters who, far from being portrayed as hateful zealots, are relatable for readers of all faiths. The extremism of Hell House is tempered by the perfectly understandable attitudes and intentions of Lacey Anne, who struggles with what it means to grow up, to question and to think for herself." --Romantic Times
"Both tender and provocative... Walker creates an astutely balanced portrait of a conservative congregation's in-your-face response to perennial issues of domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, and suicide, as well as of those who struggle to fit the prescribed Christian mold." --Publishers Weekly
"This secular story about religious people could easily devolve into camp mockery, but because Walker takes her character’s crisis of faith seriously and sensitively, readers will, too." --Kirkus Reviews
In less happy-colorful news, this site has been down for two weeks due to a dreamhost issue. Very sad. It's being rebuilt as I type on this temporary blog.
When it returns, I will have a MOTHER of Win-It Wednesdays to make up for my absence. This will include all manner of excellent books, perhaps a little Sarah Dessen, a dash of Libba Bray and a few other fantastic authors thrown in.
The pajants adventure continues with Tara Altebrando... stay tuned...
Happy Friday!
PS-I just want to say that I went a little crazy on twitter today with the Royal Wedding madness. Sorry. But there were so many fascinators that I blame sparkly-feather-eyed madness. Happy Wedding, Kate and Wills!
